DIY stone grill. How to build a barbecue from natural stone: drawings and design diagrams Do-it-yourself barbecue from stone

If you often cook barbecues in the yard, then first of all you need to buy a grill or lay out an improvised version of stones. A purchased iron grill looks banal, and if there is nowhere to put it after finishing the meal, the iron structure will quickly rust and become unusable. Moreover, you need to shell out a considerable amount to purchase it. Today we will learn how to make a barbecue from stone for a summer residence with our own hands, which will not only perform its main function, but will also decorate your garden or.

Design Features

We will build a solid structure, and not a simple well-shaped structure into which flammable materials will be loaded. We need to create something beautiful, durable and easy to use, so before turning your idea into reality, you need to find a person who will help you in this difficult task.

It is also worth choosing the site on which the barbecue will be built, and think about how much materials are needed for its construction. Before creating a model on a sheet, you need to think about all the pros and cons of such a structure.

Pros:

  • strength and durability;
  • decorativeness;
  • resistance to frost and moisture.
Minuses:
  • large expenditures of time and resources;
  • strength depends on how well the drawings are drawn up;
  • materials require processing, and the structure itself cannot be disassembled.
As a result, our DIY barbecue should look like the fireplace that was previously installed in the houses of counts and barons. Only in this case we need not only to burn fuel, but also to cook meat or fish, which makes its own adjustments.

Before you start building a stone barbecue with your own hands, you need prepare drawings and assess your needs and capabilities.

If you want the simplest design, in which there will be only a fryer and a pipe for removing smoke, then you just need to draw an option that will have a good foundation and sufficient width so that you can place a large number of skewers or lay a mesh.

It is also worth thinking about how high the pipe should be so that “waste” does not flow into the place where you will be resting. In general, creating such a design on paper does not require any special skills; it is enough to adhere to the rule of symmetry and make the top smaller than the bottom. In this case, be sure to draw the foundation.

If you want to create something really big and multifunctional, then you will have to “sweat.” Yes, you can create a barbecue that will include a warehouse for firewood and coal, a smokehouse, a cutting table and even a special heating element that heats the water. However, in this case, you must understand that the costs will be serious, and just one stone will not be enough for you. You will need brick, iron, wooden boards or round timber and much more.

To make it easier to choose a design, you can contact a specialist who designs rooms or various objects. This way you will definitely get the right drawings from which you can build the perfect grill.

Did you know? Bulgogi-This is a Korean alternative to kebabs or grilling. This dish is a marinated tenderloin, which is cooked both over an open fire and in a frying pan. During cooking, mushrooms, onions and leafy vegetables are fried along with the meat.

Choice for location

Choosing a place is not as easy as it might seem. There should be nothing near our building that could catch fire. That is, no plastic statues, or garbage dumps.

It is also worth thinking about where the smoke from the grill will come out. If you build it in such a way that all the fumes will go to your windows or the windows of your neighbors, then such a building will provide you with more problems than benefits.

Please note that the distance from the recreation area should be optimal: not too close, but not too far, so that you can control the process, but not be a meter away from the hot coals. If the area is small, you need to build a grill of appropriate size.

Important! The grill should not be built in a draft or windy place.

Dimensions and drawings

To draw up the correct drawings, we need average indicators of the length, width and height of the structure in order to create our own version based on them.

Height. The roasting pan should be located at a height of 0.8-1 m, and it should be convenient for you to manipulate it. That is, we adjust the height of the roasting pan to your height so that it is at the level of your elbows.

Length. It depends on how many people you will invite to the feast and, accordingly, how many skewers can be placed in it. On average, the length of the roasting pan should be about 50 cm. There is no point in making it longer, unless you want to fry a whole wild boar or place a pot with yushka next to the skewers.

Width. The building should not be very wide, since we will place the skewers along the length, respectively, 20-25 cm is more than enough.

Now let's discuss the general parameters of the entire building. The height of the barbecue with the foundation and pipe must be at least 2 meters, otherwise all the smoke will pour directly into the resting place. Also, do not make the grill too high, otherwise the costs will be unjustified.

The height of the foundation in which a warehouse for logs can be built should be no more than 40 cm. The length should be about 80 cm. The total width of the entire structure (not just the brazier) should be about 80 cm.

Important! Do not make the cavity for firewood too large, otherwise the structure will be unstable.

Thus, we get a square structure with a good base and convenient storage for logs.

Selection of materials

Let's start with the most important thing - the stone. It is worth assessing the size of the structure and, if possible, not using stones that easily crumble or are washed away by water (limestone). It is also better to put a heavier and stronger stone in the base, and for the pipe you can use a lighter one or replace it with brick.

Best options:

  • granite;
  • dolomite;
  • quartzite;
  • slate;
  • shungite
You can build a fireplace even from large crushed stone or large pebbles, nothing will change. The main thing is that the material is easy to work with and durable enough.

In addition to stones, we also need a solution that must withstand high temperatures. You can use both cement mortar and special mixtures that are resistant to temperature and moisture. It all depends on your preferences and finances.

Don't forget about the iron rods that will serve as the base for the brazier, and, if you wish, they can cover it on top if you want to create something like a grill.

Did you know? In the 70-80s of the last century, electric barbecues were popular. The heat came from the heated coils, and the skewers rotated automatically, similar to how a tray rotates in a microwave oven.

Required Tools

A stone brazier is built with your own hands using a fairly large number of tools, namely:

  • level;
  • hammer;
  • bucket and wheelbarrow;
  • tape measure;
  • sledgehammer;
  • chisel;
  • saw;
  • container for mixing the solution;
  • Bulgarian;
  • trowel;
  • rule.
Depending on the functionality and size of the grill, additional tools may be required, which must be taken into account before starting construction.

Building a barbecue, step-by-step instructions

To create any stone barbecues with your own hands, you need to follow a certain order, otherwise the structure will either stand poorly due to an incorrect foundation, or will turn out to be too fragile and will fall apart at the first use. Let's look at the entire construction process step by step.

Preparing the site. We start by removing all debris, leaves, branches and everything that will interfere with us from the site. Remember that the surface must be, so immediately after cleaning, put a level and check.

The initial stage of construction of the structure. In order to build a simple barbecue from stone, we need to outline an even circle around which the stone will be laid out. Any iron grate, which can be purchased in the picnic department, is perfect for this.

This grill will also cover our roasting pan, serving as a grill mesh. If you want to build a rectangular grill, then, accordingly, you need to take the grate of the same shape.

We place our grate on the ground and lay stones around it, leaving a gap of 1-2 cm between them. This is necessary so that there is good traction and the fuel flares up faster. The height of the grill can be varied, but it is better to lay out 4-5 rows so that the openings between the stones do not coincide.

Important! Use a stone that is 5 to 6 inches thick and similar in shape to pavers.

After laying out the stones, the height of the grill should be approximately 50-60 cm.

Bottom preparation. After our structure is formed, we remove the round mesh and begin arranging the bottom of the grill. We place 3 bricks on the bottom so that they meet in the center, forming something like a three-pointed star. We fill the space between the bricks with small crushed stone and compact it.

Preparation and laying of rods. We will need 3 iron rods about 50-60 cm long, depending on the diameter of the mesh around which we laid the masonry. Next, mark 13 cm on both sides of the rods and bend them so that it looks like a staple from a stapler.

After preparing all the rods, they need to be connected with clamps that are used for irrigation hoses. It is worth considering that the clamps must be made of stainless steel. We connect the rods so that they are shaped like an equilateral triangle with legs hanging down.

Installation of rods and gratings. We take 2 more clamps and use them to attach our round lattice to the legs so that it looks like a “three-legged” stool. Next, we place this structure on the stones that we placed on the bottom of the grill. This completes the construction of the structure.

The article contains information on how to choose the right stone grill for installation on the site of a private house or cottage. After studying it, you will understand why it is profitable to make a massive stationary barbecue from stone, what you need to take into account when choosing its design and installation location. This will provide the necessary theoretical basis for communicating with managers of specialized companies or private owners involved in the construction of such barbecues. Knowledge of this issue will allow you to avoid unnecessary expenses and order exactly what you need without sacrificing quality and the desired result.

A barbecue made of natural stone will create an atmosphere of comfort and decorate the surrounding space.

What he really is

Stone barbecues for summer cottages are massive structures made of natural stone, connected by a binder base of natural clay and sand. To install it, you need a reliable and massive foundation. The structure made of natural stone has a look as close as possible to the natural environment. There are many types of barbecues, from simple designs to complex complex structures for preparing a variety of dishes that harmoniously combine with a place to relax.

Advantages

Experts attribute the following to the main advantages of barbecues or barbecues made of stone:

    spectacular, respectable and status appearance;

    high strength;

    long lasting lifetime;

    excellent sustainability to all external influences (temperature and humidity changes, precipitation, low temperatures getting hot oil on stones, etc.);

    high fire resistance(you don’t have to worry about deformation and melting);

    excellent durability to mechanical wear;

    does not absorb moisture(which is important when used at low temperatures);

    practically does not absorb odors;

    don't require special care;

    easy to clean using a virtually unlimited range of detergents;

    ample opportunities in terms of design and breadth functionality.

What stone can it be made from?

Stone barbecues for summer cottages can be built from both natural and artificial stone. If the choice is made in favor of a natural material, then granite, shungite, sandstone, quartzite, slate and granite can be used for this task.

On our website you can get acquainted with the most . In the filters you can set the desired direction, the presence of gas, water, electricity and other communications.

The shape of the stones will determine the labor intensity of building a barbecue, and therefore its cost. Stones such as torn rubble, thallus and flagstone are considered easy to install.

If, in order to achieve maximum exclusivity, the choice falls on rough cobblestones of irregular shape, then you will have to “pay” for this by increasing the labor intensity of construction work and increased consumption of binding materials. At the same time, the arrangement of such a barbecue will require the involvement of highly qualified masons. All this together will affect the cost of a barbecue or barbecue made of stones.

The use of an artificial stone substitute, on the contrary, will allow you to save both on the price of the material and by reducing the labor intensity of the work due to the most convenient form of artificial stones for laying. In addition, artificial material can be modified with the help of special additives, which provide the material with additional resistance to moisture and high temperatures.

How to install a barbecue

A brazier or barbecue oven made of stone is constructed according to the following standard algorithm:

    choice standard project or ordering an individual construction project;

    choice of location for arranging a stone brazier;

    definition geometric parameters of the grill, its base, decorative and auxiliary and complementary elements;

    site preparation for the construction of a brazier;

    installation of concrete foundation;

    arrangement basement part designs;

    construction walls and the working surface of the barbecue (laying stones);

    finishing finishing;

    construction or installation decorative, auxiliary and complementary elements(canopy, benches, surfaces for cutting meat, firewood, shelves for dishes, etc.).

On our website you can find contacts of construction companies that offer construction services for small architectural forms. You can communicate directly with representatives by visiting the “Low-Rise Country” exhibition of houses.

Variety of projects

Choosing the most suitable barbecue design is mainly determined by the desired functionality and the desired design style. From a functional point of view, these can be either small braziers intended exclusively for frying meat or vegetables, or serious structures that are multifunctional grill zones. In terms of design style, the choice usually occurs between the following varieties:

    designs in the style of minimalism(neat structures with smooth walls and smooth surfaces);

    stylized as primitive“brutal” structures with braziers, built roughly and chaotically from stones of different sizes;

    neat and sophisticated barbecues in a classic or antique style made of stones of almost the same shape and size and decorative cladding.

Selecting a location

As a rule, to create maximum comfort while relaxing in the fresh air, a brazier is built near or inside (with smoke removal system equipment) covered structures that protect from precipitation. These can be various verandas, gazebos, terraces, summer kitchens. If the area of the plot does not allow the placement of such structures, then a certain area in front of the house or in the backyard is simply allocated for the construction of a barbecue area.

When choosing a location for a brazier, the following factors are taken into account: wind direction, proximity of the fireplace to flammable objects (shrubs, trees, unprotected wooden structures, dry annual vegetation), compatibility with the environment, proximity of the eating area. But when prioritizing factors, the main thing, of course, is compliance with fire safety requirements.

Dimensions of the roaster and foundation

The dimensions of the barbecue are determined by the list of tasks that it allows to implement, as well as the number of potential eaters of the meat or other dishes produced on it. In this case, the mass of natural stone should be taken into account.

Unlike a regular metal barbecue, a stone product may require a very massive foundation. And all this will affect the amount of concrete and reinforcement for constructing the slab, and therefore the cost of constructing the barbecue area as a whole. In this regard, when planning the size of the fryer and its functionality, it is necessary to minimize unnecessary frills without compromising the desired result.

Site and foundation preparation

The first step in preparing the site is to mark it, usually using pegs and rope or a spray can of paint. The boundaries of the foundation of the brazier are fixed with laces or paint. The next step is to construct a hole for the foundation, its depth is usually about 30 cm, it can vary depending on the depth of soil freezing in the region.

The boundaries of the pit usually exceed the boundaries of the foundation by 15-20 cm. Then a sand and gravel cushion is prepared and compacted (including watering). Formwork is installed on the cushion, into which metal reinforcing elements are placed. The final operation is pouring concrete; after it has hardened, the formwork is removed and waterproofing is created using roofing felt or rich clay.

Construction of the plinth, walls and working surface of the barbecue

To create a brazier, you will need a number of specialized tools: a level, a chisel, a trowel, a sledgehammer, a chisel, an angle grinder with a set of diamond discs, a carpenter's hammer, a pick, a wheelbarrow, a concrete mixer, a bucket, bayonet and shovel shovels, jointing and much more.

The stones of the base, walls, and working surface are fastened together not with cement, but with a specially prepared solution of clay and sand. The masonry begins with more massive stones, based on the principle that the higher the row, the less the mass of its constituent elements, relative to the previous row.

Finishing

To increase aesthetic appeal or give a certain design style, the walls of a stone brazier can be finished with decorative stone of a certain texture and color. Metal, main functional, decorative and auxiliary elements of the barbecue area, depending on their purpose, are installed either during the construction of walls and work surfaces, or during the finishing process.

Video description

From the video you can learn how to make a stone grill with your own hands:

Conclusion

Despite the apparent simplicity of structures made of natural stone for frying meat, these are quite expensive structures when compared with a conventional steel grill. In order not to be disappointed with the result, having spent several tens of thousands of rubles, it is better to entrust the construction of the brazier to a professional.

Every barbecue lover eventually thinks about how to build a stone grill with his own hands. After all, this is the most convenient and enjoyable way to cook meat over a fire, and barbecue is an excellent occasion to get together and relax with friends. It’s very easy to build a barbecue yourself; you just need drawings, a little material and desire.

Today you can buy a country grill, but a stone one, and even one made by yourself, will have a number of advantages over a purchased one. In addition, the owner of the barbecue, who built it with his own hands, will be able to be proud of his product.

If we talk about the advantages of stone barbecues, there are quite a lot of them:

  1. Compared to a metal one, a stone grill is much more durable and does not corrode.
  2. The working surface of a stone grill is larger, which means you can fry more kebabs or vegetables at one time. It is possible to remove almost finished pieces of meat away from the heat.
  3. A stone hearth looks much more beautiful on the site and can complement any design.
  4. A homemade grill will cost less, especially if you know where to find clay and stones.
  5. A stone stove with a smoke exhaust is much more convenient to use, since the smoke during cooking does not get into the cook’s eyes.
  6. A stone barbecue can be equipped with a tabletop, a canopy, and tools can be mounted on it. All this will make cooking on it very convenient.

Types of barbecues

The design of the barbecue itself is a box with legs, the walls of which serve to place skewers and barbecues on them, and the bottom holds the coals. But modern barbecues have several improved options:

  1. Portable - made of sheet steel, has a prefabricated design, which allows it to be transported in the trunk of a car. Quite light and mobile. The downside of this grill is its short service life.
  2. Mobile - made of thin metal or sheet steel. Can be collapsible or non-collapsible. Equipped with wheels for easy movement around the site.
  3. Electric - designed more for indoor cooking; operation requires electricity instead of firewood and coals. But the main disadvantage is the lack of natural smell and taste of food cooked on it.
  4. Stationary - can be stone, brick, metal or a combination. It is a massive structure built on a foundation. Durable and easy to use. It is also a good decoration for any yard.

Required materials and tools

To build a stove yourself, you will need some materials and tools. Before you start a job, make sure you have enough to finish it. If you decide to make a barbecue out of brick, then you should not skimp on the basic material. Only fireproof bricks can be used and must be of good quality. The barbecue stone must be durable, of regular geometric shape and small in size - for ease of laying. A stove made of stone is a cheaper and more accessible option. The material for the barbecue can be combined. For example, the main part is made of stone, and the chimney is made of brick.

Required tools:

  • concrete mixer or container for mixing concrete;
  • Master OK;
  • building level and plumb line;
  • solution container.

Required material:

  • refractory brick or stone;
  • cement and clay;
  • sand;
  • metal grid;
  • roll waterproofing (roofing felt or other);
  • fittings;
  • sheet material.

Choosing the right location for the future furnace is very important, since this is a fire-hazardous structure. It is necessary to place the building away from wooden structures, trees and other flammable materials. It is advisable to build a stone grill closer to a water source. The direction of the wind must be taken into account. Your barbecue grill should be placed so that the smoke does not reach the house or neighbor’s property.

Having decided on the location of the future barbecue, you need to select the stove diagrams. This will allow you to do everything correctly and find out in advance the dimensions of the building, decide what kind of grill you want, and calculate the approximate amount of material needed.

Base and foundation

For a barbecue, the foundation is very important. The availability and quality of the foundation determines how long your stove will last. A stone structure tends to sag in the ground, and this leads to the formation of cracks and destruction of the entire structure. The foundation must be reinforced. For this you can use 2 meshes or 3 rods. The following are step-by-step instructions for constructing a foundation:

  1. Guided by the drawings, dig a hole 30 cm deep at the construction site. The length and width of the hole should be slightly larger (10 cm) than the stove itself. For accuracy, mark the required area using pegs and twine.
  2. Pour sand into the bottom of the hole and level it (up to 10 cm). Install wood or plywood formwork along the walls.
  3. Prepare a cement-sand mortar in a ratio of 1:3 in a concrete mixer, add another 1 share of crushed stone.
  4. If you use reinforcing mesh, pour concrete into the formwork to 1/3 of the total volume, lay down the reinforcing mesh, pour another 1/3, put the second mesh and pour the remaining concrete to ground level. If you will use reinforcement rods for reinforcement, pour concrete to 1/2 of the total volume, install 3 rods and pour the other half of the concrete mixture.
  5. Level the concrete mixture and compact it. Now you need to let the concrete harden. It gains 50% of its strength in the first 3 days, 70% in the first week. At 70% concrete strength, work can continue.
  6. Rolled waterproofing material is laid on the foundation. The most common is roofing felt.
  7. Rubble concrete can also be used as a foundation for a barbecue. Unlike a conventional foundation, rubble stones and crushed stone are placed at the bottom of a rubble concrete foundation and filled with liquid cement-sand mortar, compacting it into the cracks between the stones. After this, the next row of stone and crushed stone is laid, filled with mortar, etc. The last row is aligned more carefully.

Construction of a barbecue

Before building the stove, make sure you have all the materials. It is recommended to pre-moisten bricks and stones with water so that they do not absorb it from the solution. Prepare cement, sand and slaked lime or clay. If you decide to use clay, fill it with water in advance, it should soften.

Let's look at how to fold a grill. It is necessary to start laying from the corner. It is recommended to first lay out the row “dry”, without mortar. This is needed to calculate how many whole bricks, halves or quarters are needed for 1 row. Please take into account the presence of seams. Each row of masonry must be level horizontally and vertically; use a building level and plumb line to control quality. The seams of subsequent rows of masonry must be placed above the bricks or stones, that is, each joint must be offset by half a brick or stone. It is recommended to reinforce the masonry every 3-4 rows. To do this, use reinforcing mesh or wire. If a stone oven is being built close to another building or a stone (brick) fence, the reinforcement must be inserted into the masonry of the existing building. To do this, use a drill with a drill bit of the same diameter as the reinforcement. Keep in mind that the stove will get very hot, and if the neighboring building is made of sand-lime brick or other non-fire-resistant material, then you should not build a barbecue close to such a structure.

Supports for the brazier can be made from fittings or metal corners. A metal sheet is installed on them. The main thing is that it is convenient to clean it from ash. Empty holes must be left in the side walls of the firebox for air flow into the stove. Otherwise, the wood and coals will not burn and you will not be able to create heat. The furnace firebox is made of thick metal that can withstand high temperatures, because... This is the “heart” of the fire pit.

Finishing and decoration

To get a beautiful barbecue after completing its construction, you can move on to finishing. This is especially true for those who like to eat outdoors. The folded stove is usually decorated with fireproof tiles, stone or plaster with added clay. Although stone barbecues look beautiful even without finishing, it is recommended to at least paint or whitewash them. A small set of tools will help you decorate your grill, such as:

  • poker for mixing coals;
  • shovel for removing ash;
  • a small metal sheet for fanning the fire;
  • barbecue grid (if it is not built into the oven);
  • set of skewers.

Paving slabs around the barbecue or a stone path will look good. Nearby you can make a table and seating that will not only become a worthy decoration of your summer cottage, but will also allow you to relax comfortably in the fresh air. You can attach a canopy to the stove, which will allow you to hide from precipitation and the scorching sun. You can make a countertop on the surface of the grill, this will allow you to cut and mix the ingredients of the dish right next to the stove.

Conclusion

Having learned how to build your own barbecue, we can conclude that a stone stove for a summer house is a fairly simple task that anyone can do. A barbecue for a dacha is not just a nice detail of the landscape, but also a convenient device for preparing delicious food. A summer resident who has done everything according to the instructions will be able to enjoy barbecue cooked at his dacha in a short time and with little effort and money.

A stone grill is a practical and decorative attribute for relaxing in the country. The simple design allows you to build this structure without outside help from specialists or additional equipment. With careful planning and technology, the stone grill will be reliable and will last for decades.

Considering that the brazier is constantly in sight in the yard, special attention is paid to decorating the structure. Although natural stone is attractive in itself, barbecues can be further decorated:

  • equip with stone shelves for placing pots of evergreens;
  • provide forged decorative elements and hooks for kitchen utensils;
  • add a barbecue grill and a cast iron cauldron (for cooking pilaf, fish soup and other dishes);
  • make a canopy that protects from precipitation and the scorching sun (the main thing is that the roof has a sloping vault that does not allow moisture to accumulate).

The construction and design of the structure depend on the wishes of the owner. Typically, the list of barbecue elements includes a grate, hearth, oven, smokehouse, chimney, cutting surfaces and sink (subject to water supply).

Preparatory stage of construction

The main task before starting to lay a stone barbecue is to choose the optimal location.

As a rule, the roaster is installed near the dining area; ease of use depends on this. In addition, a stone barbecue will decorate the resting place, making it original and cozy. You can place the structure next to an artificial or natural reservoir.

To prevent fire, do not install the stove under low trees, near the house or outbuildings.

Don’t forget also that the grill smokes during operation, and guests and neighbors are unlikely to like it if smoke pours in their direction. Take care about the correct location relative to the compass rose. It is better to install the stove in a quiet place or where the wind blows in the opposite direction from the seating area.

Before laying the foundation, be sure to find out the level of groundwater rise. If this is not dealt with before construction begins, water will erode the foundation of the building, and it will quickly collapse.

Think through all the nuances and parameters of the structure. Preliminarily draw up a plan for the grill, indicating the dimensions: height, length and width.

Based on this, the required amount of building materials is calculated and further purchased.

To build a brazier you will need the following tools:

  • wheelbarrow and shovel;
  • bucket;
  • concrete mixer;
  • sledgehammer and pickaxe;
  • saw and jigsaw;
  • tape measure and chalk;
  • building level;
  • hammer and chisel;
  • Bulgarian.

Materials you will need:

  • natural stone;
  • refractory brick (for laying a brazier);
  • crushed stone;
  • sand;
  • cement;
  • clay;
  • steel wire and tape 5*50 mm.

If the design involves a sink and a surface for cutting meat, a water supply system must be installed first.

A stone hearth is built either exclusively from natural material, or with the inclusion of heat-resistant brick in the design.

Scheme of a stone barbecue

Natural boulders are carefully processed before construction: cut, ground and polished.

Trimming is done using a regular stone disc or grinder. If high-precision work is required, a sawmill is used.

Grinding is carried out using a special manual or automated machine or using a grinder with grinding wheels.

How to calculate the required dimensions

Once the location of the barbecue has been chosen, it’s time to calculate its dimensions.

To do this, stand up to your full height and imagine that you are holding skewers in your hands. The distance from the ground to the hands is the ideal height of the barbecue.

To prevent the hearth from wasting air, do not make it wider than 30-40 cm (just this size is enough to place a skewer).

The length of the stove depends on the wishes of the owner and how many guests he plans to receive at the same time. For example, one meter is enough for 10 skewers with shish kebab.

There is no need to make the grill too deep; for good heat, coals of 13-15 centimeters are enough (you will only have to deepen the hearth when using a cauldron).

Laying the foundation for the furnace

The main function of a stone barbecue base is to ensure the strength and stability of the structure during periods of temperature and humidity changes.

The foundation construction process consists of the following stages:

  • dig a hole with a margin of 15-20 cm in all directions from the future building;
  • pour sand and crushed stone into the hole and pour water on it, compacting the mixture;
  • install formwork from boards along the pit, thereby giving the barbecue a rectangular shape;
  • reinforce the base with wire;
  • Fill the frame with cement mortar with the addition of small crushed stone.

After this, the foundation is allowed to harden. Before starting to build walls, the base is covered with roofing felt or other waterproofing coating.

A simpler way to build a foundation for a stone barbecue involves using large cobblestones of approximately the same size and cement mortar. As in the previous version, they dig a pit, fill in the sand-crushed stone mixture and then lay cobblestones, fastening them with cement mortar.

Brazier laying

When the foundation dries, begin building the walls of the brazier. The building material is natural stone, the fastening solution is clay, soaked for several days in water and mixed with sand in a ratio of 1:3.

To make the structure strong and durable, the laying begins with the largest stones.

Thematic material:

The hearth of the brazier is made of the strongest stones or heat-resistant solid red brick (most often stove-made).

The combination of these materials makes the structure stronger and more durable. Natural stone does not tolerate high temperatures well, so it is better to make a fire place out of brick. In turn, the stone covering the outer part of the structure looks more decorative and expensive.

Pipes and iron corners are used to create the arch and supporting pillars. The ashpit and ash pan are covered with sheet metal 5 mm thick.

If the design includes compartments for storing firewood, coal and kitchen utensils, this is taken into account at the initial stage of stone laying.

Lastly, a circle of metal with a grate is installed - a place for burning wood. To make it, a piece of iron is used for roofing, in which holes are made. To make the grill reliable, the structure is reinforced along the inner edge with a 5x50 mm steel strip.

Finishing

The finished grill is covered with decorative stones and glue (or cement mortar). The stones are first washed and polished, then installed as closely as possible to each other, creating a seamless coating.

From the remaining material they lay out a path to the stove or a platform for garden furniture.

You can add originality to your barbecue with the help of metal parts made using artistic forging: curls, forged leaves and flowers, geometric elements.

A stone grill on a summer cottage is the pride of the owner, an indicator of his financial well-being and hospitality. A roaster built in accordance with technical requirements will last for decades, delighting owners and guests with its functionality and beautiful appearance.

Every trip to the dacha is rarely complete without barbecue. Cooked meat on coals is not just food, it is spending time together, communicating with loved ones, playing with children. All this brings true pleasure. For interesting communication surrounded by nature and near a barbecue, you will need a good grill. You can buy it or make it yourself.

Alternative options

Today, metal structures for cooking meat and barbecue are very convenient. But the best option is to make a stone grill with your own hands, photos and drawings of which you can see below. Despite the simplicity of its design, this is a very convenient structure that can be used for frying meat or vegetable products. This barbecue is distinguished by its round shape, ease of construction and operation.

After studying the materials on our website “Remontik”, you can easily make a barbecue that has a beautiful appearance. It is perfect for a small number of people. The fact is that such a grill will be more convenient to clean, and there will be much less garbage from it. It can have a diameter of 1 m and a height of 65 cm. You don’t have to wash it, assemble it, and you won’t get burned on hot iron handrails. Only after cleaning it slightly, you can use it again. If you make it yourself, it will cost much less than buying it.

A stone brazier, built with your own hands, which is permanently located on the territory of a country house, can be used for many years.

We offer you a diagram of a barbecue made of stone

Attention! When laying out a stone cylinder of a barbecue, it is worth leaving a small hole for cold air, which will create draft.

Choosing essential equipment and tools

Among the tools that you will need to build a barbecue made of stone, it is worth highlighting the following:

  • pitchfork, shovel and bayonet shovel;
  • bucket and wheelbarrow;
  • carpenter's hammer;
  • trowel, pick and mason's jointer;
  • concrete mixer;
  • level;
  • hand jigsaw;
  • saw;
  • sledgehammers with long and short handles;
  • chisel with protection, socket, tongue and groove;
  • measuring tape and chalk;
  • grinder with a set of diamond blades.

Attention! Before you start building a stone barbecue with your own hands, you need to process the source material (stone) with hand tools. This process is quite labor-intensive and low-productivity.

But be that as it may, the tool for such work is inexpensive, which means that if it breaks, you can quickly replace it.

Drawings of a barbecue made of stone, made by yourself

Every project requires a project, and a stone barbecue is no exception. This task is easiest for any stove maker to handle. If you do not have such knowledge, we recommend ordering a project by contacting a specialized organization. In addition to the drawing itself, you will receive a technical specification, which will contain a step-by-step description of the work with diagrams.

After studying the drawings and approving the project, you can begin the construction itself. With the help of a drawn diagram, you can imagine the future structure, which will save your time during the construction of the structure. The picture is taken on two sections from the inside.

The project should also contain descriptions of procedures. For effective work, carefully study the provided drawing, as all the stones are clearly marked on it.

Attention! When performing procedures, follow the instructions of specialists. Otherwise, even deviations that seem insignificant to you can cause a lot of trouble during operation of the barbecue.

How to make a stone grill with your own hands

  1. Pouring the foundation.

Whatever barbecue you choose: an indoor building or a rectangular structure, you should take care of building a high-quality foundation. If you are planning to equip a simple structure, then you can make a base of cobblestones on a cement base. If you plan that your barbecue will have a height of more than 1 meter, then the foundation will have to be built below the freezing level of the soil. Otherwise, the upper part of the structure will tilt and swelling of the frozen soil will occur.

If the land has clay soil, then pour the concrete solution into the dug hole. Do not reach the edges of the hole by about 15 cm. Then install the formwork to create a smooth, rectangular structure. If the soil is sandy, install the formwork immediately. Once the foundation has hardened, you can remove it. If we talk about waterproofing, it must be done using white, red or yellow clay.

  1. Preparing the base.

When building a barbecue with your own hands, do not forget that you must be able to lay bricks. Otherwise, it's worth hiring someone who understands this. The entire construction process should begin with the construction of the base of the barbecue.

To do this, you need to dig holes with a diameter of 120-130 cm and a depth of 80 cm. Place a layer of crushed stone on the lower bottom part, and a layer of sand on top. After this, fill everything with concrete mortar. Next you need to reinforce the base using steel reinforcing mesh. When this part is built in, it will look like a vertical cylinder with a diameter of 1 meter.

After ten days, when the concrete hardens and becomes strong, inside the embedded mesh you need to lay it out using a cement mortar consisting of fragments of parts of bricks or stones. The inner surface should not be embossed. The smoother it is, the better.

When this part is covered with natural stones, problems may arise due to the relief. The stone structure resulting from the work described above has the shape of a cylinder. It is necessary to add soil inside the building, then immediately compact it. After such work, a depression resembling a bowl remains, 55 cm deep.

  1. Facing stage.

The outside of the future kebab house should be finished with natural stone, but using only profile or specialized glue. Otherwise, after the firewood burns out in the barbecue several times (if the tiles are not installed with special glue), they will simply fall off and there will simply be no visual appeal. This is a good glue that has a dry consistency that can be purchased at any hardware store.

It is very helpful for holding stones together and forms waterproof joints. Such a grill may be exposed to snow or rain, but the facing tiles will not fall off and will last a very long time.

During installation, individual tile parts must be selected, like a mosaic or puzzle. They should be adjacent to each other's base. Stones located on the outside must be tied in a checkerboard pattern with other stones laid out inside. They need to be fixed with a steel thread.

  1. Preparing the hood.

When you lay out a stone cylinder, you need to leave a hole at the bottom for cold air, which creates draft. It is necessary to lay a metal structure in the form of a circle to burn and accommodate the fuel. A metal circle can be cut from a sheet of metal using a grinder. Any metal can be used, even unnecessary and old. There will be a removable grill at the top, through which cold air will penetrate, ensuring the frying process.

A steel hoop, the size of which is 6x60 mm, is secured in the internal focal perimeter. This will be used to protect the stone edges and will act as a support and base for laying down the net or skewers. You can also add an additional function – grill. For example, it is convenient to grill chicken, meat dishes or fish, and bake vegetables on a grid.

This will require installing racks on a steel hoop. A spit that will rotate and be placed on such racks. We recommend using reinforcing steel to make the rod. This material is fire resistant and has a long service life. When the masonry is finished, line the perimeter of the installation with refractory bricks where the brazier will be located.

For this layout, it is better not to use a solution, but to resort to the “sand cushion” method. Just pour sand and lay the bricks. This is done so that if a tile cracks or breaks, it can be replaced with a new one. You can build a barbecue structure with a firebox. However, this will require an exhaust pipe. It is worth noting that this is quite a troublesome job that requires skills and abilities.

If a person does not understand this, nothing may work out, since homemade stone barbecues cannot provide normal draft in chimneys.

Alternative to a stone grill

To make a more complex structure with normal draft and chimney, you can make a steel fireplace, which is subsequently trimmed with stone on all sides.

Whatever fireplace you decide to make, it is important not to forget that stone or brick should not be afraid of fire. Otherwise, a serious blast wave may occur from the fire, causing stones to fly off into small pieces and possibly cause injury. As a result, your picnic will go down the drain. And the appearance of the grill may suffer.

The lower part near the fireplace must be tiled. It is both more beautiful and fits well on the grill. You have the option of creating a square fireplace with a stone cladding, but with steel guards for high strength.

The method described above for building a stone barbecue with your own hands is inexpensive and effective. Every man can make this design, the main thing is to decide on the right place and strictly follow the instructions. It is better to choose a place for the fireplace where there are no drafts, otherwise the heat will be regularly blown away by the wind.
